Months after it launched its Echo series in India, Amazon is bringing the Alexa Echo Spot device enabled for video to the country. While this is a good indicator that India seems to have an appetite for smart speakers, it is interesting that this release comes weeks after the launch of its rival Google Home.
The Echo Spot has a peculiar design and looks like an alarm clock, but it is different from other Echo devices available here due to its small screen. The screen allows users to ask Alexa's intelligent assistant to play some types of video content and even allows them to make video calls to other people with the Alexa application on their phone. Yes, there is a camera on the front of the device.
Puneesh Kumar, Country Manager – India, Alexa Experience & Devices said that although the Echo Spot has a screen, the idea is to keep the voice as the main mode of interaction. "It does everything Alexa does, but it becomes more attractive thanks to the screen," added Parag Gupta, Director of Sales and Marketing at Amazon Devices. Gupta said there are already 15,000 available skills for Alexa of which "a lot" are relevant to India.
The 2.5-inch round shows contextual cards to show with most of your queries. For example, if you ask for weather, a weather card will be displayed. If you request news, there will be a video depending on the source. And yes, the screen will help you buy on Amazon.in also using voice commands and the screen to browse the products.
The Alexa Echo Spot will be available in India from April 25, with a price of Rs 12,999. But as a launch offer, the price is only Rs 10,499. You can buy two Echo Spot for only Rs 19.999. It will be available in black and white color options. There is no news about when the Alexa Echo Show, which has a larger screen, will be available in India.
